No one was injured, but damage from a house fire on South Murphy St. Friday morning is extensive.

And a community effort is building to help the tenants of the burned house, Trevor and Natalie MacLeod and their two children, aged three and seven.

“At 10:38 am on Friday, Jan. 9, Campbell River Fire Crews responded to a call about a possible chimney fire at a single family residence at 97 South Murphy St. When crews arrived there was heavy smoke coming from all sides of the structure,” say Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Doherty. “We requested help from additional crews to respond from both fire stations, and when fire fighters went into the house to try to extinguish the flames, they discovered extreme fire conditions, and an area of the floor had collapsed. Crews quickly withdrew from inside the house and began fighting the fire from the exterior of the building to knock down the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring buildings.”

No one was home at the time of the fire, and cause of the fire is under investigation. The home was insured but the MacLeods have lost all their belongings.

Anyone wishing to help the MacLeods can make a cash donation at either branch of Coastal Community Credit Union. Apply it to “MacLeod Family in trust.”
